Private Health Insurance Options

J-2 dependents must carry health insurance at all times. Not carrying insurance that meets the minimum requirements is a violation of status that can result in SEVIS record termination. F-2 dependents are not required to carry health insurance, however, due to the high cost of healthcare in the U.S., we strongly encourage students to purchase private insurance for any F-2 dependents.

Here are some examples of health insurance providers that offer plans tailored to international students. We do not endorse or monitor these insurance companies or their plans.

Free and Low-Cost Health Services

If your F-2 dependents are uninsured, underinsured, or cannot afford health care, they still may get free or reduced-fee health care. Some community clinics offer medical services free, low cost, or on a sliding fee scale.

Sliding scale fees are fees for services that are adjusted depending on an individual's household size and income. Usually, immigration status is not a factor in order to receive these benefits. Anyone who lives in the United States may apply. However, you must check with a clinic’s financial aid department to see if you qualify for a sliding scale fee.

  • El Rio Health provides a variety of services for medical, dental, and mental and behavioral health. Check with El Rio’s financial aid department to see if you qualify for a sliding fee.
  • Literary Connects has compiled a list of free and low-cost health care services in Tucson. Please call to verify that this information is up to date by contacting the clinics directly prior to visiting.
  • Pima County Health Department offers a variety of preventive health programs for women, men and children, as well as immunizations. There is no fee for immunizations for children 18 and under.
  • Pima County Public Library has compiled a list of free and low-cost mental health resources in Arizona.
