Your eligibility for these scholarships is often determined by financial need, merit, identity, the location of your study abroad program, and/or the what you are studying. New Horizon: New Start Study Abroad Award
Award Amount: $1000
In recognition of the drive and initiative of New Start alumni, Arizona International Study Abroad is proud to offer a $1,000 automatic scholarship to support participation in approved study abroad programs. This award is designed to support students who completed the New Start summer program to expand their global perspective and pursue transformative international experiences. No additional application is required, eligible students will automatically receive the scholarship after committing to their eligible study abroad program.
Eligibility
- Must have completed the New Start Summer Program from 2025 onward.
- Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
- Must be applying or accepted to a for-credit, in-person Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty-led, exchange, summer research, internship program or is at an Arizona Abroad Location.
- Programs not eligible for this award: Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), fully-funded study abroad programs, virtual programs and non-credit student travel abroad.
- Must have a Traveler profile on Via TRM, the platform in which study abroad applications are hosted.
How to Apply
- This award does not require an additional application beyond the Arizona International Study Abroad program application in Via.
- Eligible New Start students are required to attend a Study Abroad session that will guide them through the study abroad planning and preparation process. The session must be attended before the student's selected Study Abroad program application deadline.
Terms and Conditions
- This award is dependent on commitment to and completion of an eligible Arizona International Study Abroad program.
- If an awarded student withdraws from their study abroad program, the scholarship will be revoked.
- Award funds will be disbursed to the student’s Bursar account before study abroad program charges are due. Funds may be applied toward any outstanding balances.

- Students receiving this award will be asked to participate in post-program feedback, promotional materials or events to help inform and inspire future study abroad students.

Renee Griggs IAU Travel Award
The Renee Griggs IAU Travel Award was established in 2023 through generous support from the Institute for American Universities (IAU) to recognize Renee Griggs’ 42 years of dedicated service and her ongoing commitment to expanding access and removing barriers for University of Arizona students. The award is intended to empower and encourage students to participate in study abroad opportunities and experience the transformative impact of a global education. One Renee Griggs IAU Travel Stipend in the amount of $500 will be awarded in Fall, Spring, and Summer academic terms. University of Arizona Study Abroad will automatically determine your eligibility for the Renee Griggs IAU Travel Stipend upon committing to the following Institute for American Universities (IAU) programs: UA Barcelona Semester or Summer, UA Madrid, UA Florence or UA Aix-en-Provence.
The UA Study Abroad Office will automatically determine your eligibility for the Renee Griggs IAU Travel Award upon committing to an eligible study abroad program and does not require an additional application.

Renee Griggs Study Abroad Scholarship
For over 42 years, Renee Griggs put her heart and soul into advocating for all students who expressed an interest in studying abroad at the University of Arizona. During her career in the field of international education, Renee provided guidance and support to over 7,000 students as they prepared to study abroad.
The Renee Griggs Study Abroad Award was established in 2022 to honor Renee’s ongoing commitment to expanding access and removing barriers for University of Arizona students pursuing study abroad opportunities. This scholarship celebrates Renee’s impact by helping make global experiences possible for more students, opening the door to life-changing journeys around the world. Award amount will be $1000 eligible to be used towards Fall or Academic Year Study Abroad Programs.

The Places You’ll Go Passport Stipend is a $200 award designed to support students applying for their first U.S. passport. This one-time stipend helps cover the cost of a passport book for students who are applying to study abroad and have never had a U.S. passport book.

How to Apply
- Students who attend a required passport application session will need to confirm their eligibility based on criteria above and will need to create a Via Traveler Profile.
- Students who meet the eligibility criteria and attend the required passport application session will be able to complete a Google Form application to be considered for this stipend.

- There are a limited number of awards available each term and students are encouraged to apply early. Submission of an application does not guarantee selection.
- Selected students are required to attend a workshop, held virtually or in-person that will guide them through the passport application process.

UA Barcelona IAU Merit Award
Award Amount: $1,000
The UA Barcelona IAU Merit Award is made possible through generous funding from the Institute of American Universities (IAU) to recognize high-achieving University of Arizona students and to encourage students to take advantage of the Fall semester in Barcelona, a term that offers an immersive study abroad experience with smaller cohorts.
Eligibility
- Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing with a U of A cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
- Must be applying to the UA Barcelona study abroad program for a Fall Semester or Academic Year.
- Must rank among the 15 students with the highest cumulative University of Arizona GPA in the UA Barcelona Fall cohort.
How to Apply
- This award does not require an additional application beyond the Arizona International Study Abroad program application in Via.
- Eligibility will be determined automatically upon submission of the Study Abroad application for the Fall semester or Academic Year at UA Barcelona.
- The 15 students with the highest cumulative University of Arizona GPA, as shown in UAccess on April 1st, will be automatically selected to receive the scholarship.
Terms and Conditions
- This award is dependent on commitment to and completion of a Fall Semester or Academic Year at the UA Barcelona study abroad program.
- If an awarded student withdraws from their study abroad program, the scholarship will be revoked.
- In the event of a GPA tie, priority will be given to students who committed to the program earlier.
- Award funds will post to students' Bursar accounts as a refund after Study Abroad program charges are billed.
- If you are eligible for the IAU Barcelona Merit Award and are also awarded the Achieve Award or the Discover Award, you will only be able to receive one award. In these cases, you will automatically be awarded whichever scholarship provides the higher funding amount.
- Students may only receive this award once.
