Cynthia White Travel & Study in Italy Award

For students enrolled in a UA Classics course while studying abroad in Italy. Several $250 travel awards are available for:

  • Explore Italy (Spring Break 2026): 1-unit CLAS 499 course using Italian cities as your text. Deadline: Nov. 15, 2025.

  • Arizona in Orvieto (Summer 2026): Mid-May to late June program. Deadline: Mar. 3, 2026.

Applicants must submit a 250-word statement describing what they hope to gain from the course and trip. Include your name, UA email, award name (“Cynthia White Award”), and study abroad program. Email materials to religious-studies-classics@arizona.edu with “Cynthia White Award Application” in the subject line.

Renee Griggs IAU Travel Award

The Renee Griggs IAU Travel Award was established in 2023 through generous support from the Institute for American Universities (IAU) to recognize Renee Griggs’ 42 years of dedicated service and her ongoing commitment to expanding access and removing barriers for University of Arizona students. The award is intended to empower and encourage students to participate in study abroad opportunities and experience the transformative impact of a global education. One Renee Griggs IAU Travel Stipend in the amount of $500 will be awarded in Fall, Spring, and Summer academic terms. University of Arizona Study Abroad will automatically determine your eligibility for the Renee Griggs IAU Travel Stipend upon committing to the following Institute for American Universities (IAU) programs:  UA Barcelona Semester or Summer, UA Madrid, UA Florence or UA Aix-en-Provence.

The UA Study Abroad Office will automatically determine your eligibility for the Renee Griggs IAU Travel Award upon committing to an eligible study abroad program and does not require an additional application.

Eligibility 

  • Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
  • Currently applying to one of the following University of Arizona Study Abroad programs:  UA Barcelona Semester or Summer, UA Madrid, UA Florence or  UA Aix-en-Provence.
  • Must have a Traveler profile on Via, which is the platform where study abroad applications are hosted.
  • Must have a current FAFSA on file for the academic year of application.
  • Priority given to students who are recipients of needs-based aid such as: Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Subsidized Student Loan, or Federal Work Study or need-based institutional grants such as the University Grant, Arizona Assurance or Achievement Award
  • Preference is given to:
    • First-generation college students.
    • Students who are first-time international travelers.
    • Arizona Resident students.
    • Students who were not awarded other financial needs based Study Abroad scholarships.

How to Apply

  • This award does not require an additional application beyond the Arizona International Study Abroad program application in Via.
  • Eligibility will be determined automatically upon commitment to an eligible study abroad program.

Terms and Conditions

  • This award is dependent on commitment to and completion of an eligible Arizona International Study Abroad program.
  • If an awarded student withdraws from their study abroad program, the scholarship will be revoked.
  • Award funds will be disbursed to the student’s Bursar account before study abroad program charges are due. Funds may be applied toward any outstanding balances.
  • Students may only receive this award once.
  • Selected students will be asked to send a digital thank you postcard or narrated short video to Ms. Renee Griggs from their time abroad.
  • Students receiving this award will be asked to participate in post-program feedback, promotional materials or events to help inform and inspire future study abroad students.

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) awards scholarships to 60-70 outstanding students in a variety of academic disciplines for use during the following academic year. Scholarships range from $2,500-$12,000.

Etruscan Foundation Fellowship

The Etruscan Foundation Fieldwork Fellowship is designed to support participation in field schools or archaeological fieldwork at Etruscan and indigenous sites of non-Greek Italy from the Neolithic through the 1st Century BCE.
