Explore the World Travel Scholarship: First Passport Edition

The HI USA Explore the World Travel Scholarship: First Passport Edition supports young Americans with financial need who want to gain meaningful international experiences and are applying for their very first passport. Each year, they award an additional 5 scholarship recipients who receive $3,000 in funding to help cover the costs of an international trip that includes an educational or service-learning component. In addition to financial support, recipients participate in pre-travel programming and become part of a community of travelers committed to cultural exchange and global understanding.

Eligibility:

  • Must be 18–30 years old
  • U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or green card holder residing in the United States or a U.S. territory
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have limited travel experience and limited travel resources
  • Travel must include an educational or volunteer component
  • Have never held a U.S. passport
  • Be eligible to receive a U.S. passport

Fearless Inquiries Abroad Scholarship

The College of Humanities offers Fearless Inquiries Abroad Scholarships, supporting 30 College of Humanities students to participate in transformative study abroad programs. The scholarships are part of the Fearless Inquiries Project, made possible by alumni Jacquelynn and Bennett Dorrance’s generous support of the College. The Fearless Inquiries Project is a long-term, flagship effort specifically aimed at catalyzing a national culture that prizes open discussion, independent judgment and the questioning of stubborn assumptions.

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in majors offered by the College of Humanities at the University of Arizona.  Applicants must be participating in a College of Humanities faculty-led study abroad program.  

Applicants must fill out a short application form on Scholarship Universe.  No personal statements or letters of recommendations are required.

Study Abroad Social Media Ambassador Stipend

Award Amount: $250 for semester or summer programs

The Social Media Ambassador Stipend was created to give Study Abroad students the ability to showcase their international experiences. Selected students will contribute directly to content creation for official university social media accounts and build valuable, marketing-related skill sets as they inspire future students on the @uastudyabroad Instagram (and possibly the main @UArizona social platforms!). This is a competitive award given to 10-12 students per semester/summer.

Eligibility

  • Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
  • Must be applying or accepted to a for-credit, in-person Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty-led, exchange, summer research, internship program or an Arizona Abroad Location.
    • Programs not eligible for this stipend: Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), virtual programs and non-credit student travel abroad.
  • Must have a Traveler profile on Via, the platform in which study abroad applications are hosted.
  • Note: Academic Year and Calendar Year students may apply separately for each of the semesters that their program covers.

How to Apply

  • Students applying for a given study abroad term will receive an email with the Social Media Ambassador application link and deadline for their term.
    • Summer: deadlines typically in April
    • Fall: deadlines typically in April
    • Spring: deadlines typically in November
  • The application link will include questions about social media experience and ideas. It will also ask students to provide sample content. 
    • Sample content will be used for ambassador selection only and will not be used publicly.
  • Incomplete Social Media Ambassador applications will not be considered.
  • Selection is competitive and limited to 10-12 stipend per semester/summer.

Ambassador Requirements While Abroad

Selected students will:

  • Host a Study Abroad Instagram story takeover with 3 accompanying Instagram posts 
  • Submit quality photos of their time abroad (60 for semester, 30 for summer)
  • Submit quality b-roll videos of their time abroad (15 for semester, 10 for summer)
  • Submit Instagram Reels of their time abroad (3 for semester, 1 for summer)

Terms and Conditions

  • This award is dependent on commitment to and completion of an eligible Arizona International Study Abroad program.
  • If an awarded student withdraws from their study abroad program, the stipend will be revoked.
  • Stipend funds will be disbursed to the student’s Bursar account after the social media content has been delivered. 
  • Stipend funds may be applied toward any outstanding balances on student accounts.
  • Stipend amount is based on completion of the Study Abroad Social Media Ambassador requirements. Partial completion of requirements may result in partial payment. 
  • Students receiving this award may also be asked to participate in post-program feedback, promotional materials or events to help inform and inspire future study abroad students.

The Janice B. Gerton Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship

The UA History department annually awards $5000 to eligible students participating in a study abroad program.  This scholarship may be used for courses of study at any college or university located outside of the United States for students participating in a credit-bearing, faculty-led, exchange or direct enroll program whose credits are fully accepted by UA for a UA degree program.

The Places You'll Go Passport Stipend

Award Amount: $200
The Places You’ll Go Passport Stipend is a $200 award designed to support students applying for their first U.S. passport. This one-time stipend helps cover the cost of a passport book for students who are applying to study abroad and have never had a U.S. passport book.

Eligibility

  • Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
  • Must have a Traveler profile on Via TRM, the platform in which study abroad applications are hosted
  • Must be eligible to acquire a U.S. adult passport.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Be 18 years or older
  • Never had a U.S. passport book
  • Not have already applied for a U.S. passport book
  • Priority will be given to students who are applying or already accepted to a for-credit, in-person Arizona International Study Abroad program that is is a faculty-led, exchange, summer research, internship program or is at an Arizona Abroad Location. 

How to Apply

  • Students who attend a required passport application session will need to confirm their eligibility based on criteria above and will need to create a Via Traveler Profile.
  • Students who meet the eligibility criteria and attend the required passport application session will be able to complete a Google Form application to be considered for this stipend.
     

Terms and Conditions

  • There are a limited number of awards available each term and students are encouraged to apply early. Submission of an application does not guarantee selection.
  • Selected students are required to attend a workshop, held virtually or in-person that will guide them through the passport application process.
  • Selected students must upload either their passport application receipt or the confirmation email received after applying for their U.S. passport.
  • Stipend funds will be disbursed to the student’s Bursar account and may be applied toward any outstanding balances.
  • Students may only receive this award once.
  • This stipend is not eligible to be used for passport renewal costs.

Discover Award: Internship or Research Abroad Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,500 for semester and year-long programs; $1,000 for summer programs
The Discover Award supports University of Arizona students participating in study abroad programs that include an internship or research component. This award recognizes students who are expanding their academic or professional experience through hands-on, experiential learning in a global context.

Eligibility

  • Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
  • Must be applying or accepted to a for-credit, in-person academic year, calendar year, semester or summer Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty-led, exchange, summer research, internship program or is at an Arizona Abroad Location.
  • Arizona International Study Abroad program must include a credit-bearing internship or a research component.
    • Programs not eligible for this award: Short-term Winter or Spring Break Programs, Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), fully-funded study abroad programs, virtual programs and non-credit student travel abroad. 

How to Apply

  • The application for the Discover Award will be available within eligible study abroad program applications in Via.
  • The deadline to submit this form depends on the term abroad. Students should apply earlier for the best chance of being selected.
    • Summer: Feb. 15
    • Fall and Academic Year: Apr. 1
    • Spring and Calendar Year: Nov. 1
  • Students are required to attend a LifeLab session through Center for Career Readiness (CCR). Students must upload email verification of their attendance as part of their Achieve Award application.
  • After attending LifeLab, students must also upload an updated resume or LinkedIn profile that clearly connects their current skills and experiences to how these will translate to their international experience 

Terms and Conditions

  • Students may be asked to submit documentation verifying internship or research participation (e.g. placement confirmation or project proposal).
  • Students may not receive both the Discover Award and the Achieve Award. If eligible for both, students should apply to the Discover Award.
  • Students may not receive the Discover Award and the Garcia Family Foundation Scholarship. If you are eligible for both, you will automatically be awarded whichever scholarship provides the higher funding amount.

There & Back Again Award

Award Amount: $500
The There and Back Again Again Award supports University of Arizona students who have previously participated in Arizona International study abroad programs and are ready to take on a second international experience. This scholarship encourages students to continue their global learning journeys, deepen cross-cultural competencies, and expand on the academic, professional, and personal growth they began during their first experience abroad.

Eligibility

  • Must be a currently enrolled University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
  • Have successfully completed an Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty led, exchange or at an Arizona Abroad location.
  • Must be applying or accepted to a for-credit, in-person Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty-led, exchange, summer research, internship program or is at an Arizona Abroad Location.
    • Programs not eligible for this award: Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), fully-funded study abroad programs, virtual programs and non-credit student travel abroad.

  • The application for the There & Back Again Award will be available within eligible study abroad program applications in Via.
  • The deadline to submit this form depends on the term you will be abroad. Students should apply earlier for the best chance of being selected.
    • Summer: Feb. 15

Achieve Award: High Merit & Employed Student Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,500 for semester and year-long programs; $1,000 for summer programs
The Achieve Award supports high-achieving University of Arizona students who are balancing academic excellence with employment responsibilities. This scholarship recognizes the commitment and discipline required to maintain strong academic performance while being employed and encourages students to pursue global opportunities.

Eligibility

  • Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing with a U of A cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher at the time of application.
  • Must be currently employed in a paid position at the time of application. Eligible employment positions include on- or off-campus roles where applicants receive regular wages (hourly or salaried) from an employer.
  • Must be applying or accepted to a for-credit, in-person academic year, calendar year, semester or summer Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty-led, exchange, summer research, internship program or is at an Arizona Abroad Location.
    • Programs not eligible for this award: Short-term Winter or Spring Break Programs, Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), fully-funded study abroad programs, virtual programs and non-credit student travel abroad.

  • The application for the Achieve Award will be available within eligible study abroad program applications in Via.

New Horizon: New Start Study Abroad Award

Award Amount: $1000
In recognition of the drive and initiative of New Start alumni, Arizona International Study Abroad is proud to offer a $1,000 automatic scholarship to support participation in approved study abroad programs. This award is designed to support students who completed the New Start summer program to expand their global perspective and pursue transformative international experiences. No additional application is required, eligible students will automatically receive the scholarship after committing to their eligible study abroad program.

Eligibility

  • Must have completed the New Start Summer Program from 2025 onward.
  • Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
  • Must be applying or accepted to a for-credit, in-person Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty-led, exchange, summer research, internship program or is at an Arizona Abroad Location.
    • Programs not eligible for this award: Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), fully-funded study abroad programs, virtual programs and non-credit student travel abroad.
  • Must have a Traveler profile on Via TRM, the platform in which study abroad applications are hosted.

How to Apply

  • This award does not require an additional application beyond the Arizona International Study Abroad program application in Via.
  • Eligible New Start students are required to attend a Study Abroad session that will guide them through the study abroad planning and preparation process. The session must be attended before the student's selected Study Abroad program application deadline.
