The Explore Award is designed for students participating in short-term study abroad programs such as spring break or winter session. This award supports students eager to broaden their worldview through brief yet impactful global experiences.

Eligibility

• Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
• Must be applying or accepted to a for-credit, in-person Arizona International Study Abroad short term program (e.g. Spring Break or Winter Session)
  • Programs not eligible for this award: Semester Programs, Summer Programs, Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), fully-funded study abroad programs, virtual programs and non-credit student travel abroad.
• Preference is given to students who are not receiving other Arizona International Study Abroad funding.

How to Apply

• Students can apply for the Explore Award directly in their Via application of eligible Study Abroad programs.
• Applicants will be required to submit a short essay as part of the application process.
• The priority deadline to submit the application to the Explore Award is Nov. 15 for both Winter and Spring Break programs. Students should apply early for the best chance of being selected.

Terms and Conditions

• Students may not receive the Explore Award and the Garcia Family Foundation Scholarship. If you are eligible for both, you will automatically be awarded whichever scholarship provides the higher funding amount.
• There are a limited number of awards available each term. Submission of an application does not guarantee selection.
• This award is dependent on commitment to and completion of an eligible Arizona International Study Abroad program.
• If an awarded student withdraws from their study abroad program, the scholarship will be revoked.
• Award funds will be disbursed to the student’s Bursar account after Study Abroad program fees are posted and before study abroad program charges are due. Funds may be applied toward any outstanding balances.
• Students may only receive this award once.
• Students receiving this award will be asked to participate in post-program feedback, promotional materials or events to help inform and inspire future study abroad students.
   

Description

This scholarship provides up to $7,000 to support University of Arizona students with financial need who plan to participate in for-credit University of Arizona Study Abroad programs. Funding is awarded directly to qualified students to help offset the cost of eligible study abroad programs.

Award Amounts: Up to $7,000 depending on the need and cost the study abroad program.

Eligibility

• Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
• Must be applying or accepted to a for-credit, Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty-led, exchange, summer research, internship program or is at an Arizona Abroad Location.
  • Programs not eligible for this award: Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), fully funded programs, virtual programs and non-credit student travel abroad.
• Must have demonstrated financial need which may be based on:
  • Current FAFSA on file and/or
  • Current participation of U.S. Federal or State governmental assistance programs (e.g., SNAP, WIC, unemployment, Medicaid, AHCCCS, etc.) and/or and/or
  • Current employment with an expected significant loss of income during the year
• Preference is given to:
  • First-generation college students.
  • Students who are first-time international travelers.

How to Apply

• The application for the Garcia Family Foundation Scholarship for Study Abroad Scholarship will be available as part of eligible study abroad program applications. Click here to discover your program options. Students will be required to complete a short form for the purpose of identifying and supporting students who are seeking financial support to study abroad.
• The priority deadline to submit the application form in Via TRM depends on the term students will be abroad. Applications for the Garcia Family Foundation Scholarship for Study Abroad are reviewed on a rolling basis and some students may be notified of award before the priority deadline. Students are encouraged to apply early, as funding is limited.
• Priority Deadlines:
  • Summer: March 1
  • Fall and Academic Year: April 15
  • Spring, Calendar Year, Spring Break and Winter: October 15
  • If funding is available after these priority deadlines, awards will continue to be made until all funds are distributed. 

Terms and Conditions

• Funding is limited by term. Scholarship decisions are made based on demonstrated financial need, eligibility and preference factors outlined above. Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee funding.
• Scholarship is dependent on commitment to and completion of an eligible Arizona International Study Abroad program.
• If a selected student withdraws from their study abroad program, any scholarship funding awarded will be revoked.
• Award funds will be disbursed to students’ Bursar account before study abroad program charges are due and may be applied toward any outstanding balances.
• Each student may be granted this award a single time; repeat awards are not permitted.
• If you are eligible for the Garcia Family Foundation Scholarship for Study Abroad and are also awarded any of the following awards — the Achieve Award: High Merit & Employed Student Scholarship, the Discover Award: Internship or Research Abroad Scholarship, or the Explore Award: Short Term Program Scholarship — you will only be able to receive one award. In these cases, you will automatically be awarded whichever scholarship provides the higher funding amount.

For over 42 years, Renee Griggs put her heart and soul into advocating for all students who expressed an interest in studying abroad at the University of Arizona. During her career in the field of international education, Renee provided guidance and support to over 7,000 students as they prepared to study abroad.

The Renee Griggs Study Abroad Award was established in 2022 to honor Renee’s ongoing commitment to expanding access and removing barriers for University of Arizona students pursuing study abroad opportunities. This scholarship celebrates Renee’s impact by helping make global experiences possible for more students, opening the door to life-changing journeys around the world. Award amount will be $1000 eligible to be used towards Fall or Academic Year Study Abroad Programs.

The UA Study Abroad Office will automatically determine your eligibility for the Renee Griggs Study Abroad Scholarship upon committing to an eligible study abroad program and does not require an additional application.

Eligibility

• Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
• Must be applying or accepted to a Fall or Academic Year Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty-led, exchange, or is at an Arizona Abroad Location.
  • Programs not eligible for this award: Summer Programs, Spring or Calendar Year Programs, Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), fully-funded study abroad programs, virtual programs and non-credit student travel abroad.
• Must have a current FAFSA on file for the academic year of application.
• Priority given to students who are recipients of needs-based aid such as: Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Subsidized Student Loan, or Federal Work Study or need-based institutional grants such as the University Grant, Arizona Assurance or Achievement Award
• Preference is given to:
  • First-generation college students.
  • Students who are first-time international travelers.
  • Arizona Resident students.
  • Students who were not awarded other financial needs based Study Abroad scholarships.

The Renee Griggs IAU Travel Award was established in 2023 through generous support from the Institute for American Universities (IAU) to recognize Renee Griggs’ 42 years of dedicated service and her ongoing commitment to expanding access and removing barriers for University of Arizona students. The award is intended to empower and encourage students to participate in study abroad opportunities and experience the transformative impact of a global education. One Renee Griggs IAU Travel Stipend in the amount of $500 will be awarded in Fall, Spring, and Summer academic terms. University of Arizona Study Abroad will automatically determine your eligibility for the Renee Griggs IAU Travel Stipend upon committing to the following Institute for American Universities (IAU) programs:  UA Barcelona Semester or Summer, UA Madrid, UA Florence or UA Aix-en-Provence.

The UA Study Abroad Office will automatically determine your eligibility for the Renee Griggs IAU Travel Award upon committing to an eligible study abroad program and does not require an additional application.

Eligibility 

• Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
• Currently applying to one of the following University of Arizona Study Abroad programs:  UA Barcelona Semester or Summer, UA Madrid, UA Florence or  UA Aix-en-Provence.
• Must have a Traveler profile on Via, which is the platform where study abroad applications are hosted.
• Must have a current FAFSA on file for the academic year of application.
• Priority given to students who are recipients of needs-based aid such as: Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Subsidized Student Loan, or Federal Work Study or need-based institutional grants such as the University Grant, Arizona Assurance or Achievement Award

Professor Donna Swaim was “a revered teacher and mentor whose 50-year University of Arizona career stretched broadly across campus, from humanities to medicine to athletics, and included trips to dozens of countries for student study abroad.” Donna Swaim led one of the first University of Arizona study abroad programs 1979 and that was only the beginning! During her career at the U of A, Professor Swaim led students on 24 trips abroad that spanned over 36 countries. This Study Abroad Award was established to Honor Professor Donna Swaim’s legacy, dedication, and service and to encourage students to participate in international experiences.

The Study Abroad Office will automatically determine your eligibility for the Donna Swaim Travel Scholarship upon committing to an eligible study abroad program and does not require an additional application.

Eligibility

• Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
• Must be applying or accepted to a summer Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty-led, exchange, summer research, internship, or is at an Arizona Abroad Location (Preference given to students on Faculty-led programs).
  • Programs not eligible for this award: Semester programs, Full Year Programs, Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), fully-funded study abroad programs, virtual programs and non-credit student travel abroad.
• Must have a current FAFSA on file for the academic year of application.
• Priority is given to study abroad students who demonstrate financial need and who were not awarded other financial needs based Study Abroad scholarships.

University of Arizona graduate and Study Abroad alumna Allison Feldman passed away at 31 years old. Her family and friends created an endowment in her name to memorialize her transformative study abroad experience in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, in 2004. Her father encouraged Allison to study abroad, and says she returned to the U.S. more confident, excited about life, and a fluent Spanish speaker. He and Allison’s mother, along with close friends, hope to honor her memory by providing study abroad opportunities to deserving University of Arizona students. Award amounts vary (minimum amount is $500), eligible to be used towards spring semester or calendar year study abroad programs.

The UA Study Abroad Office will automatically determine your eligibility for the Allison Feldman Memorial Scholarship upon committing to an eligible study abroad program and does not require an additional application.

Eligibility

• Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
• Must be applying or accepted to a Spring semester or Calendar Year Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty-led, exchange, or is at an Arizona Abroad Location.
  • Programs not eligible for this award: Summer Programs, Fall or Academic Year Programs, Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), fully-funded study abroad programs, virtual programs and non-credit student travel abroad.
• Must have a current FAFSA on file for the academic year of application.
• Priority is given to study abroad students who demonstrate financial need and were not awarded other financial need based Study Abroad scholarships.

The US Dept. of State’s Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that has been successful in supporting students who have been historically underrepresented in education abroad, including but not limited to first-generation college students, veteran students, ethnic or racial minority students, students with disabilities, and students attending minority-serving institutions. Scholarship amounts range from $100-$5,000 depending on need and expense of Study Abroad program chosen.

All eligible students who successfully complete an application to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship will also receive a $750 Gilman Application for Travel Opportunity (GATO) Award from Arizona International Study Abroad towards a future international experience on an eligible study abroad program (eligible programs include Faculty-led, Exchange or Arizona Abroad Locations)! 

Awards of up to $500 are available for any University of Arizona student enrolled in CLAS/RELI 305 and/or CLAS 335 through the Arizona in Orvieto, Italy Study Abroad Program. Priority will be given to majors or minors in the Department of Religious Studies & Classics, but all U of A students (with any major/minor) can apply. The number and amount of awards will be determined by the number and quality of applications received.

Additional monetary awards are available for majors in Classics, Religious Studies, and/or RSHP who are enrolled in CCLAS/RELI 305 and/or CLAS 335 through the Arizona in Orvieto, Italy Study Abroad Program. The number and amount of awards will be determined by the number and quality of applications received. Majors in the department will be considered for both the General Award and the Majors Award.

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invests in deserving U.S. undergraduates who are least likely to study abroad. FEA considers financial need, demographic factors, and academic plan and preparedness to decide scholarship recipients.
