Gilman Application Towards Opportunity (GATO) Award
The Gilman Application Towards Opportunity (GATO) Award is a $750 scholarship for University of Arizona students who submit a complete and eligible application to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, regardless of whether they are selected for the Gilman Scholarship itself. Applying for national scholarships takes time and effort, and this award recognizes and encourages students to apply for big opportunities to help make their study abroad goals more accessible.
Eligibility
- Must be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking University of Arizona student in good academic standing.
- Must be applying or accepted to an in-person Arizona International Study Abroad program that is faculty-led, exchange, or at an Arizona Abroad Location.
- Programs not eligible for this award: Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, Departmentally Managed Programs (DMP), Project GO, Dorrance, CAST, Global Career Accelerator, virtual programs, spring break and winter short-term programs.
- Must have a current Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be Pell Grant eligible for the academic year of application to the Arizona International Study Abroad program and the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship.
- Must meet the eligibility requirements to apply for the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship or the Gilman McCain Scholarship
- Must have submitted a complete and eligible application to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship by the national deadline.
- Must have a Traveler profile on Via, the platform in which study abroad applications are hosted
How to Apply
- Students who meet the eligibility criteria and submit a complete, eligible Gilman Scholarship application by the national deadline will automatically receive this award, regardless of Gilman award status.
- Eligibility will be determined automatically upon commitment to an eligible study abroad program.
Terms and Conditions
- This award is dependent on commitment to and completion of an eligible Arizona International Study Abroad program.
- If an awarded student withdraws from their study abroad program, the scholarship will be revoked.
- Award funds will be disbursed to the student’s Bursar account before study abroad program charges are due. Funds may be applied toward any outstanding balances.
- Students may only receive this award once.
- Students receiving this award will be asked to participate in post-program feedback, promotional materials or events to help inform and inspire future study abroad students.
