Major & Minor Requirements
Each major and minor has a specific list of requirements you need to earn your degree. You may be able to find courses that fit these requirements on a study abroad program.
When looking for courses for your major or minor requirements, there are two great places to start.
- Check to see if your major or minor has any Global Tracks. Global Tracks explain how the courses at a study abroad location apply to the requirements of your major or minor.
- Check to see if your department offers a Faculty-Led Program where you can travel and learn with faculty and students from the U of A.
Don’t worry if your major or minor doesn’t seem to have a perfect program fit at first glance. Start looking through the Program Search for programs that interest you, and look through their course lists to find possible options.
General Education Requirements
Courses that don’t apply to your major or minor may apply to your Gen Ed requirements. As you look through study abroad programs, make a list of courses that interest you and schedule an appointment with your academic advisor to talk them over.
Language Courses
Unless otherwise noted, study abroad courses are taught in English. If you’re looking to expand your skills in another language, consider taking a language course abroad. You can find language courses by looking through the course offerings listed on each study abroad program’s webpage. It may be helpful to start your search by looking at Faculty-Led Programs that offer language courses.
Internships for Credit
Internships, fieldwork, and research-based study abroad programs offer academic credit. How this credit applies to your degree will depend on your major and the specific study abroad program you select. Stay in contact with your academic advisor and your study abroad coordinator to make sure the program you choose aligns with your academic goals as well as your professional goals.
Electives
Even if a class does not fulfill a specific graduation requirement, your academic advisor may be able to approve it as an elective. If there’s a class you want to take but it doesn’t seem to fit into your degree, talk to your academic advisor to see what your options are.
