Her stoles feature the University of Arizona and College of Humanities logos, as well as honor cords. Sunlight filters in from the left, casting a warm glow over the scene and highlighting her achievement and cheerful expression. A tattoo is visible on her upper arm, and framed mementos can be seen on the windowsill behind her.

As Teagan Watkins prepares to graduate from the University of Arizona, her story highlights the meaningful impact of international education. Originally from Arvada, Colorado, Teagan grew up as a gymnast, an honors student, and a community volunteer. Over the last four years, she has blossomed into a confident, driven leader. Teagan has been shaped by her studies, service, and a life-changing semester abroad.

Teagan is a dual major — graduating with honors in Applied Humanities with a concentration in Public Health and a Bachelor of Arts in French. Starting as an undecided student, she discovered her calling after taking an introductory Public and Applied Humanities course, joining an Honors Alternative Spring Break trip, and completing an internship that brought together her interests in health, culture, and community engagement. Her French minor grew into a full major as she committed to studying abroad.

The iconic Shard building rises prominently in the background under a partly cloudy sky. She smiles gently at the camera, enjoying the sunny weather and urban scenery. Glass railings and modern architecture frame the elevated setting.

In spring 2024, Teagan spent a semester in Aix-en-Provence, France. The experience influenced her both personally and professionally. Drawn to the city’s small-town charm, Mediterranean lifestyle, and immersive academic offerings, she found herself not only studying but growing in ways she never expected. “I saw myself adapt to new ways of living, learn how to plan and problem solve, and find new ways to be carefree and live in the moment,” she said. One of her most unforgettable memories was a spontaneous trip to Essaouira, Morocco, where she sipped mint tea by the ocean, explored bustling markets, and rode camels along the beach. It was an experience she never anticipated but will always treasure.

Reflecting on the idea of “home,” Teagan now views it not as a single place but as a feeling of belonging. “My semester abroad showed me that I have the capacity to make any place a home,” she shared.

Teagan’s passion for international education extends beyond her journey. As a peer advisor for UA Study Abroad, she has helped other students explore global opportunities, often recommending her beloved program in Aix-en-Provence. The city, she says, offers “hands-on, immersive classes,” a warm climate, and a walkable, welcoming atmosphere ideal for personal growth.

Thanks to her experience abroad, Teagan has secured an Alumni Fellowship that will take her back to Aix-en-Provence this fall. There, she’ll support new students, help coordinate activities, and continue building her professional network in international education. Her long-term goal is simple but profound: to help others, whether through health, mentorship, or education, by being a positive presence in their lives.

As a student speaker for the Global Graduation - Study Abroad Celebration, Teagan hopes to inspire others to approach life with curiosity, adaptability, and openness. “Freshman year me would be shocked at who I have become,” she reflected. “I’ve transformed from a quiet, shy perfectionist into a confident, connected, driven leader. The U of A has given me the tools to succeed in any future I choose.”
With deep gratitude to the Arizona International team, Teagan credits her time abroad and her role in the study abroad office as defining experiences. As she prepares to cross the stage, she leaves a legacy of curiosity, courage, and compassion, qualities that will continue to guide her wherever she calls “home” next.
