Each semester, a number of students make the life-changing decision to transition from the University of Arizona International Direct online program to the main campus. Arif, an astronomy major from Dhaka, is one of these students. He is getting ready to make the move to Tucson and continue his education alongside other international  and domestic students at the University of Arizona.

Long before beginning university, Arif's passion for astronomy began during his childhood in Dhaka. He fondly recalls evenings spent stargazing during power outages and candlelight dinners, captivated by the beauty of the moon and stars. His curiosity about the universe was nurtured through school projects, visits to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre, and reading books like Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" and Carl Sagan's "Cosmos.”

His path to Tucson first began by enrolling in University of Arizona International Direct. Arif valued the independent learning style of online learning as it creates a sense of self-reliance. The asynchronous format has concentrated the pressure towards the end of each term, empowering him to be responsible for learning the material, completing assignments, and meeting deadlines.

To say the least, it's been a challenging but rewarding academic experience," Arif shares.

He also emphasizes the importance of staying connected with professors and advisors, noting that the support of his academic advisor, Kevin Carton, proved to be invaluable during the difficult moments last semester. Carton’s guidance alongside faculty encouragement motivated Arif to persevere and ultimately succeed.

Arif is all set to move to Tucson this fall and his excitement is palpable as he anticipates the new opportunities. "Arriving at the main campus feels overwhelming in the best way possible!" he exclaims. His plans include a visit to the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter with new friends, reconnecting with professors and TAs, and exploring the beautiful city of Tucson.

Arif's journey is a testament to the power of curiosity, and a love for learning. As he transitions to the main campus, his enthusiasm and dedication to astronomy will undoubtedly lead to remarkable achievements.
