International student enrollments in 2023 reach the highest on record for UArizona
Arizona International has helped achieve the highest international student enrollments for the University in fall 2023, through continued innovation in future student outreach and growth of the international microcampus network.
For the combined main campus and global fall 2023 census dates, the University of Arizona reached a total of 7,003 international student enrollments across all modalities and locations, a 20% increase over fall 2022. The enrollment period also set the record for most diverse cohort, including more than 128 nationalities.
The continued increase in demand for UArizona main campus programs was demonstrated by growth in applications of 36% for fall 2023 over the prior period. Total new to main campus international enrollments reached 976 for fall 2023, an 11% increase over fall 2022. This included an increase of 10% in new undergraduate enrollments and an increase of 13% in new graduate enrollments.
“The Arizona International team has long been committed to helping a diversity of students obtain a high-quality education from the University of Arizona,” said Vice President for Arizona International and Dean of International Education Dr. Jenny Lee, “In addition to supporting commencing students at our main campus in Tucson, we have also expanded our network of microcampus partners and programs being delivered around the world. I thank the dedicated Arizona International team for their intensified efforts this past year, helping so many students realize their academic potential.”
Microcampus enrollments for fall 2023 also set a record of 2,751 total students studying at 16 partner institutions in 12 countries, an increase of 40% on the prior year. While international students learning across all online modalities increased 72% from 373 students in fall 2022 to 641 in fall 2023.
“The University of Arizona continues to lead in innovative delivery models for students based abroad through the microcampus network. Our focus going forward is to deepen our partnerships globally and expand academic offerings so that even more students can access an international education, whether that’s in their home country or abroad.” said Interim Assistant Dean, Academic Affairs, International Education, Hillary Vance.
The University of Arizona Microcampus Network expanded into Central Asia in 2022, adding nationally funded dual degree programs in biotechnology and information science at Kozybayev University in Kazakhstan in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science. In 2023, a further dual degree in special education was added in line with the Government’s objectives to develop skills and techniques of future teachers for educating children with learning challenges.
The international student cohort is part of a bigger picture that includes a record enrollment for the University, welcoming one of the largest and most diverse classes in university history with 9,178 first-year students. This year’s first-year enrollment surpasses last year’s historically large class and is almost 8% higher than the 2021 incoming class.
