The Most Striking UA Study Abroad Photos of 2017

Call it a gift from the Instagram generation.

Increasingly, University of Arizona students are creatively documenting their global experiences through photos and videos. Tapping into the trend, UA Study Abroad conducts a contest each year, encouraging students to catalog their experiences studying, researching or interning in another country. This year, UA Study Abroad received more than 300 photo and video submissions.

The grand-prize photo winner, Simran Heer, a junior studying business and computer science, took home a $700 flight voucher from CEA Study Abroad, which offers study-abroad programs to UA students. Her photo, "City of Skies," features a dramatic blend of colors and cultures, as she posed in black clothing amid the backdrop of a bright blue corridor. Taken in Morocco, the photo tells the story of Jewish refugees who fled to the small city of Chefchaouen to escape persecution in Europe. According to Heer, the refugees painted the walls blue to symbolize the area's significance as a safe haven and to remind others to live a spiritual life. 

The grand-prize video winner, Christopher Vidano, also earned a $700 flight voucher for his lively compilation of people, landmarks and celebrations from the Arizona in Orvieto program. Highlighting vibrant people and medieval architecture, Vidano, a junior studying business, captured the essence of the picturesque hilltop city in the Umbrian region of central Italy.
