International Education Week 2020

International Education Week (IEW) is a time we take each year to celebrate the benefits of international education and global exchange. A joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, universities and institutions around the globe are encouraged to create and participate in events around IEW, that promote these global initiatives. This year's theme is "Engaged. Resilient. Global."

IEW is part of our ongoing efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study and learn at the University of Arizona through exchange experiences. In past years, colleges and departments throughout the University have held in-person events, campus-wide activities, and an annual Global Wildcats Got Talent Show. 

While IEW events are not taking place in-person this year, we invite you to enjoy some virtual events that may interest you. Please email Arizona Global to add an event to this list.

ALL WEEK:

• In lieu of their annual Global Wildcats Got Talent show, International Student Services is hosting a Global Wildcat Gallery showcasing the talents of our wonderfully diverse international students community. Participants were invited to respond through poetry, music, art, photography, video, or dance, to the prompt "What Home Means to Me." Students from around the world have submitted their original pieces, and you can see them in the Gallery.

TUESDAY 11/17:

• Join Assistant Dean, Global Admissions and Enrollment, Stephanie Adamson, for an informative webinar covering everything international students need to know about our bachelor's degree programs. Tuesday, November 17, 2 pm GMT (7 am MST) Register here and a Zoom link will be sent to you. 

• The Center for Creative Photography in partnership with the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona is digitally convening photographer Susan Meiselas and Dr. Ruken Sengul in Conversation (Virtual), November 17, 2020 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm (MST). The conversation will focus on their respective work about the stories, memories and diasporas of Kurdish peoples. Details here.

WEDNESDAY 11/18:

• Study Abroad is hosting two virtual events this week, for students planning ahead for future opportunities.
  • Learn about the UA Sydney Program for studying abroad in Australia, on Wednesday, November 18, from 3-4 pm. 
  • Attend the Study Abroad 101 session on Wednesday, November 18, at 4 pm. If you have questions about applying for study abroad, or how to map out your experience, this workshop will give you a head start, with hands-on assistance from the Study Abroad team.
• The Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) at the University of Arizona is hosting a Virtual Film Screening of 'A Siege of Salt and Sand' on November 18, 2020 4:30pm to 5:30pm. The film will be presented by its filmmaker, Sam McNeil, a video journalist for The Associated Press in China, who recently graduated from the University of Arizona's School of Middle Eastern & North African Studies and School of Journalism. He will also be discussing how his dual degrees have shaped his career. 
• Test Your Worldly Wits! Wednesday, November 18, 6-7 pm. Join your friends in a battle for the title of World Genius! Come compete in a quiz game hosted on Zoom by University of Arizona Libraries that will test your knowledge of world history and cultures, fun facts, and trivia. The top three scorers will win exciting prizes! 

THURSDAY 11/19:

• The Division of Agriculture, Life and Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension (ALVSCE) presents the Perspectives on Diversity & Inclusion Series "Intergenerational Relationships and Men's Role in Promoting Change." Speaker Michael Brasher, executive director of Boys to Men Tucson, has a career working in the fields of gender justice, conflict and peacemaking, and nonprofit leadership. Michael spent several years in South America working with local organizations focused on national conflicts. After completing his master's degree in transnational anti-violence strategies, he transitioned to a domestic violence organization in Arizona where he helped to build an innovative prevention program aimed at organizing men to end gender-based violence. OTHER EVENTS:

• The Fred Fox School of Music showcases student performances through virtual events, hosted here. Listen to doctoral, senior, and other student recitals.
• View Monuments, presented by Arizona Arts Live, daily beginning at sunset each night from October 29 through November 29 in the trees of the University of Arizona. Projecting the faces of some of our local heroes in an outdoor environment that allows for physical distancing will provide the community an opportunity to engage with and enjoy this work at their own pace each evening. Monuments is the brainchild of internationally acclaimed artist Craig Walsh. Known for his pioneering works, including innovative approaches to projection mapping in unconventional sites, Walsh’s site-responsive works have animated natural environments and features such as trees, rivers, and mountains, as well as public art projects in urban and architectural spaces. Details here on the Arizona Arts Live website. 
• The University of Arizona Museum of Art presents a virtual tour: PICTURING 2020: VISIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION. Over the summer of 2020, the UAMA invited artists from our community to submit artwork depicting their myriad experiences with the destabilizing events of this year. Their overwhelming response resulted in Picturing 2020: A Community Reflects, an online exhibition featuring works by more than 150 artists from across Southern Arizona. Showing now through March 21, 2021.
