Times Higher Ed, Research.com rank U of A among top 25 US public universities
Two new prestigious international rankings recognize the University of Arizona as a top-25 U.S. public research institution.
The U of A tied for No. 136 globally, No. 45 in the U.S. and No. 22 among U.S. public colleges and universities in Times Higher Education's World University Rankings 2025, released Wednesday. The global ranking represents a 19-spot increase from the previous year and a 44-spot increase from the 2023 ranking. The U of A also ranked No. 14 among state flagship universities and No. 4 among Hispanic-Serving Institutions.
In the new rankings, 2,092 universities (185 more than last year) from 115 countries and regions are ranked. The U of A ranks in the top 7% globally. The university's best scores came in the categories of research quality (86.3 out of a possible 100) and industry engagement (81).
The U of A also ranked in the top 100 globally in physical sciences (tied for No. 65) and social sciences (No. 92).
"As Arizona's flagship land-grant university, the U of A is dedicated to education that creates opportunity and innovation that tackles our society's most pressing challenges," said University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella. "The Times Higher Education ranking reflects our well-earned reputation for excellence and our strengths in areas of critical importance to the nation and world."
Times Higher Education has been ranking global colleges and universities for more than two decades. For the 2025 rankings, Times Higher Education assessed research-intensive universities across 18 performance indicators in the following five categories, with varying weight given to each:
- Teaching: 29.5%
- Research environment: 29%
- Research quality: 30%
- International outlook: 7.5%
- Industry (income and patents): 4%
This year's rankings examined more than 157 million citations across 18 million research publications and included survey responses from more than 93,000 scholars globally.

The U of A also saw its ranking improve in the third edition of the Best Universities in the World list compiled by Research.com. The university moved up 26 places compared with last year's ranking, coming in at No. 68 overall. The U of A ranks No. 38 among U.S. universities, No. 20 among U.S. public institutions, No. 13 among state flagship universities and No. 6 among HSIs.
