International Education Update: International Summit and Visits Building Strong Bonds with Our Partner in India
Members of UArizona delegation presented on grand challenges to health and how to deepen and extend global collaborations between our Universities.
In August, a delegation from the University of Arizona attended an International Summit on Health Innovation hosted by our microcampus partner in India, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita) University.
The delegation included University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Liesl Folks, Dean, International Education JP Jones, Assistant Vice President, International Education Hillary Vance, and Co-Director, UArizona Center on Aging Dr. Janko Nikolich.

In addition to UArizona, on hand for the summit were administrators and health science representatives from Harvard University, Stanford University, University of California San Diego, University of Buffalo, and others.
Following the summit, on August 25, Amrita University celebrated the opening of a new 2,500-bed hospital in Faridabad, outside of New Delhi. Amrita Hospital Faridabad, is a multi-specialty center featuring cutting-edge technology with allied research and teaching centers focused on heart health, cancer diagnosis and therapy, neuroscience and neurological disorders, diabetes, liver disease, organ transplantation, mother and child health, and more. Advanced technologies include robotic surgery, molecular diagnostics, medical imaging, interventional radiology, among others.
The new health science campus at Faridabad is Amrita’s eighth campus, and will include housing for faculty, students, and researchers, as well as a 300,000 square foot research building aimed at finding solutions to the world’s most pressing health issues. UArizona will join other leading institutions in developing research programs that collaboratively access Amrita’s research talent as well as the large patient population at the hospital.
The visit resulted in numerous discussions with Amrita partners at campuses in Kochi and Amritapuri, both in Kerala State, India, as part of University of Arizona International Education’s efforts to build on the UA-Amrita dual degree master’s program in cellular and molecular medicine, led by Carol Gregorio, assistant vice provost for Health Sciences International at UArizona, and JP Jones, dean of International Education.
