In modern business the concept of culture, both national and corporate, are no longer limited to specific geographic borders.
Corporations are now multi-nationals and they succeed through the movement of their products and people to new markets. This international movement has coined the phrase ‘4D business’ because the modern company, worker and manager are more Diverse, Dispersed, Digital, and Dynamic than ever before.
To appreciate this and prepare you for the world of global work this course will cover three related areas of study: 1. Management, 2. Globalization and 3. Culture, with a particular focus on the ‘interconnectedness’ of these modern business disciplines. Central also to the direction of this course will be for students to understand “Cross-Cultural Literacy” in two ways: developing it in a personal sense and demonstrating it in a professional context.
The module examines and analyses what constitutes both real leadership and effective managerial technique in today’s cross-cultural environment of global business, intergovernmental/non-governmental action, and international relations. Students will therefore study, analyse and debate a considerable number of subjects, including: language and communication, cross-cultural conflict resolution and negotiation, intercultural sensitivity and competency, global human resource management, the impact of culture on organization and leadership theory, and multi-cultural team-working. In summary, it aims to provide students with practical knowledge and the necessary skills to utilize cultural awareness and sensitivity for effective leadership in any cross-cultural setting.
