Arizona Abroad Locations:

Arizona Abroad Locations are new high-capacity, multi-disciplinary study abroad programs that are designed to be financially and academically accessible to all students. Each Arizona Abroad Location is based at a partner university or partner organization. You will find that each location is a little different in terms of curricular offerings and credit earned, so be sure to look at each location's program page for more information. Students will earn transfer credit for coursework taken at an Arizona Abroad Location.

UA Faculty-led:

UA Faculty-Led programs are organized and/or taught by UA professors and staff. Students take classes with other UA students. Participants earn direct UA credit, which means grades received are calculated into the UA GPA.

Exchange:

Students attend one of UA's partner institutions abroad for a semester or academic year and attend classes with a mix of local and international students. Participants pay the equivalent of UA tuition and earn transfer credit, which does not affect the UA GPA. Please note: space is limited on some exchanges, so students need to apply early!

The Study Abroad office works with the Office of Transfer Credit & Articulation, which is responsible for determining transferability of courses taken at partner institutions abroad. This process is built into the Study Abroad application, and students work with their Study Abroad Coordinators to ensure courses are approved for transferability.

Many courses have already been evaluated for transferability. The Study Abroad office is working to list all evaluated courses under the Academics tab of each program listed in the Program Search. Additionally, please use Transfer Credit Guide (TCG) and the Supplemental International Transfer Credit Guide (SITCG) to search for courses.

If the courses do not appear in the TCG or the SITGC, please follow these steps:

1. Students meet with a study abroad coordinator. Click here for contact information.
2. Students select courses from the partner institution or provider program that they would like to take.
3. Students enter the courses that they wish to take in their UAbroad (study abroad) application for transfer credit pre-approval.
4. Students receive the results of the pre-approval from a study abroad coordinator.
5. Students connect with their Academic Advisor to discuss applicability of pre-approved courses toward their degree and complete the Study Abroad Course Applicability to Degree Form (this form is available after students have received the results of their transfer credit pre-approval).

Filling Out the Course Applicability to Degree Form:

For exchange programs and AZ Abroad programs, students are asked to select 4-8 courses that they plan to take while abroad. We recommend that they list up to 8 courses in case their first choices have been filled by the time they register with their host institution. Once the Transfer Credit and Articulation (TCA) office has evaluated the student’s courses, the Study Abroad Coordinator will email the student and you with a list of these evaluations. The two of you will then work together to complete the Course Applicability to Degree form. Directions are as follows:

1. The student will fill out the Course Prefix (host institution), Course # (host institution), Host Credits, Course Title at Host Institution, and UA Credit Conversion (can be found in the International Credit Conversion Guide)
2. You (the advisor) will fill out the following:
   1. Applicability to Student’s Degree Requirements - based on TCA’s evaluations, please determine how this course will fit in the student’s degree (major elective, gen ed elective, et cetera)
      1. If the course is needed for the student’s minor, they will need to meet with their minor advisor to have them sign off on the course’s applicability to the minor
   2. Upper Division - information will be denoted in TCA’s evaluation
   3. Advisor’s initials, name, and signature

All of the federal financial aid (FAFSA) and UArizona institutional scholarships that students receive at the University of Arizona can be applied to the cost of study abroad for any program that includes University of Arizona Tuition and Fees as part of the total program costs. Currently, this includes all Arizona Abroad Location and Exchange programs. Please note: federal financial aid and UA institutional scholarships can NOT be used for Faculty-Led programs, Non-UA Study Abroad Programs, or any Departmentally-Managed Program that offers transfer credit.

The types of financial aid and scholarships that can be used include, but is not limited to, the following:

Undergraduate Grants:

• Federal Pell Grant
• University Grant
• Arizona Assurance Program

UA Scholarships:

• Wildcat Tuition Awards
• Arizona Tuition Awards
• Transfer Tuition Scholarship
• Most outside scholarships can also be used, but you must check with your funding source to verify this!

Loans:

• Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans
• Parent PLUS loans
• Private loans

The only financial assistance that is not applicable to study abroad is Qualified Tuition Reduction (QTR), which only applies to students who have a legal guardian that works for the university.

The Study Abroad office does not recommend students enroll in iCourses while they are participating in a study abroad program. Doing so may jeopardize students' full time status at the partner institution, will create added tuition charges for the students, and may be prohibited by certain partners. If a student urgently needs to register for an iCourse concurrently with their study abroad courses (ie; capstone, thesis, etc.) please contact the Study Abroad team to discuss the individual situation.

Internships are available at UA Barcelona, UA Madrid, UA Aix-en-Provence, and UA London. Students will receive ELCR 3TR credit by participating in an internship at any of these four locations and do not need to enroll in an additional 393 or 493 course. Advisors and students should work together to determine how this internship experience and this credit may apply to degree requirements.
