Tucson native Trevor Cameron Barroero, a Univeristy of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music percussion student, has won the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy's concerto competition.

Barroero is now scheduled to perform as a guest percussionist and timpanist with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of maestro Arthur Arnold.

"To perform Russian music with a Russian orchestra will be the opportunity of a lifetime," said Barroero, a Flinn Scholar, who is currently completing his final year of undergraduate studies at the UA as he pursues a Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance.

Barroero is a student of UA music professors Norman Weinberg and Morris Palter.

"Trevor is a wonderfully talented student who is a joy to coach. Along with his natural ability, he is incredibly focused and dedicated to being the best musician he can possibly be," said Weinberg, who is retiring from the UA in the spring. "And on top of that, he's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. His recent successes are just the tip of the iceberg of his future in the arts."

Barroero will fly to Russia on Nov. 26 and rehearse for several days with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra before its concert on Dec. 1. He will be a guest in an all-Tchaikovsky performance at the Grand Hall Moscow Conservatory. The program will consist of "Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture," Violin Concerto (with soloist Kristóf Baráti) and Symphony No. 1, "Winter Dreams."

Barroero has been the gold medalist of more than a half-dozen concerto competitions. He has performed as a featured soloist in Canada and with nearly every major orchestra in southern Arizona, including the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, the Tucson Pops, the Civic Orchestra of Tucson, the Arizona Symphony Orchestra and the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra. He also has been a featured guest performer on the "Morning Blend" television show and on the KXCI "Locals Only" radio broadcast.

Barroero was a selected participant of the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar, the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Institute. For two consecutive years, he was a participant at the Aspen Music Festival and School. He was the winner of the annual mock audition at the Washburgh Timpani Seminar in 2016 and runner-up in the Cloyd Duff Timpani Masterclass mock audition in 2015.

A founding member of the percussion trio Lineage Percussion, Barroero made history in May 2016 as his ensemble won the bronze medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, becoming the first percussionist in the 43-year history of the competition to be selected as a senior-division finalist.

Before that accomplishment, the trio was a semifinalist in both the Coltman Chamber Competition and the 2015 Fischoff Competition and was a third-place winner at the Percussive Arts Society's Chamber Competition. Endorsed as educational artists by Mike Balter Mallets and Remo Drumheads, Lineage Percussion has presented clinics for elementary schools, high schools, retirement communities and private organizations in the state of Georgia.

EXTRA INFO

Those wishing to hear Trevor Cameron Barroero perform before he leaves for Russia will have an opportunity to attend his senior recital on Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Crowder Hall at the Fred Fox School of Music. Admission is free.
