The US Dept. of State’s Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that has been successful in supporting students who have been historically underrepresented in education abroad, including but not limited to first-generation college students, veteran students, ethnic or racial minority students, students with disabilities, and students attending minority-serving institutions. Scholarship amounts range from $100-$5,000 depending on need and expense of Study Abroad program chosen.

All eligible students who successfully complete an application to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship will also receive a $750 Gilman Application for Travel Opportunity (GATO) Award from Arizona International Study Abroad towards a future international experience on an eligible study abroad program (eligible programs include Faculty-led, Exchange or Arizona Abroad Locations)!
Each year the College of Humanities is pleased to offer scholarships to deserving students enrolled in disciplines across the College. These scholarships have been made possible by the generosity of alumni and donors who have demonstrated a long-standing interest in education and the Humanities.
Humanities students studying abroad are encouraged to apply for the study abroad specific awards: Fearless Inquiries Abroad, Alfred and Mary Beigel Memorial Scholarship, Donna Swaim Study Abroad Award for Double Majors & Werner Schirmer Memorial Scholarship
Spring 2025 applications will open in early January 2025 and will be due February 17, 2025.
Awards of up to $500 are available for any University of Arizona student enrolled in CLAS/RELI 305 and/or CLAS 335 through the Arizona in Orvieto, Italy Study Abroad Program. Priority will be given to majors or minors in the Department of Religious Studies & Classics, but all U of A students (with any major/minor) can apply. The number and amount of awards will be determined by the number and quality of applications received.
Additional monetary awards are available for majors in Classics, Religious Studies, and/or RSHP who are enrolled in CCLAS/RELI 305 and/or CLAS 335 through the Arizona in Orvieto, Italy Study Abroad Program. The number and amount of awards will be determined by the number and quality of applications received. Majors in the department will be considered for both the General Award and the Majors Award.
