In general, students are eligible to study abroad beginning the summer after their first year of college. Students who have holds on their University of Arizona student account that prevent enrollment are ineligible for study abroad until the hold is cleared. Some programs may have additional eligibility requirements. Please see individual program listings for more information.
Note: Students must maintain eligibility even after being accepted into a study abroad program. Failure to maintain eligibility may result in the student being administratively removed from the study abroad program. Students who are administratively removed will be subject to the Withdrawal Policy that applies to their study abroad program.
REQUIREMENTS
GPA Requirement: Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to study abroad. However, there are some programs that require a higher GPA. Each program webpage lists the program-specific GPA required for participation and applicants must meet that program-specific GPA requirement.
Disciplinary Clearance: Study Abroad will work with the Dean of Students to determine eligibility for study abroad. Students currently charged with a violation of the Student Code of Conduct or those who have been found responsible for a violation with sanctions currently imposed will be evaluated for study abroad eligibility on a case-by-case basis. Students who become ineligible for disciplinary reasons will be administratively removed from the study abroad program and will be subject to the Study Abroad Withdrawal Policy.
Holds: Students must clear all holds on their account by working directly with the University of Arizona college or office issuing the hold. Holds prevent a student from being registered for courses and financial aid (if applicable) from being released. Study Abroad is not able to remove or override holds for students. Even after acceptance, students who cannot be registered by Study Abroad may not be permitted to participate in study abroad programs. Students with holds preventing enrollment will be administratively removed from the program prior to the 100% liability date and will be subject to the Study Abroad Withdrawal Policy.
Class Standing: In general, students may study abroad beginning the summer after their first year of college and are required to have sophomore standing. However, some programs may have specific requirements relating to class standing. These requirements are outlined on the information page for each program.
Non-UA Students: Non-degree-seeking students are welcome on University of Arizona Faculty-led programs but are ineligible for Arizona Abroad and Exchange programs through the University of Arizona. International non-degree seeking students must demonstrate English language proficiency as determined by the University of Arizona.
Graduating Students: Students who plan to graduate before the start of their study abroad program must apply as non-degree seeking students. Alternatively, graduating students may be able to work with their Academic Advisor to change their graduation until the completion of the program.
Minors: Occasionally, Study Abroad creates programs especially designed for minor participants. For all other Study Abroad programs students must be 18 by the program start date.
Full-time Status: Full-time enrollment during a study abroad program is required. The number of units required to obtain full-time status is determined by program, but typically follows the Academic Policies set forth by the University of Arizona. Only credit-bearing courses taken for a grade (including S, P, F grades) are counted toward minimum enrollment.
