Important U.S. Immigration Update
July 17, 2026
We are sharing an important U.S. immigration update.
A rule to end the “duration of stay” admission period for F-1 and J-1 visas originally announced on August 28, 2025, has been finalized by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and will take effect on September 15, 2026.
IFS is moving quickly to analyze this final rule to determine the direct impact for University of Arizona international scholars. An email update with further details and an invitation to an information session will be shared in the coming days.
We understand you may have questions about how this will impact your immigration status and we are committed to sharing the most accurate and timely information as soon as possible. Please allow the IFS team time to better understand this new law so we can be effective in communicating its implications. In the meantime, J-1 international scholars should follow all current immigration regulations and regularly check the IFS website.
