The American University in Cairo was founded by Americans in 1919 with the purpose of starting an English institute within the Middle East. It has maintained English as its language of instruction and has a strong emphasis on community service. The university is based around the liberal arts and encourages students to actively engage in the world around them and to incorporate a wide range of disciplines into their studies. The curriculum is designed not only to make students more knowledgeable about modern Egypt, but to highlight world issues and encourage critical thinking in order to work towards solutions that make a difference.
