An interdisciplinary exploration of sound in new media art. The course will be based on Kodwo Eshun'; concept of sonic fiction (the point where sound and science fiction intersect), in order to provide a framework for discussion of the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of new media art. In parallel, students will have a hands-on experience of creative computer coding, with the aim of implementing technology to give creative expression to their experience of selected science fiction texts. The course does not assume prior knowledge or experience of artistic creation or computer coding. Emphasis is placed on experiential learning, and for this reason class meetings take place in a computer lab.

Music Fundamentals: How Music Works

Course Description:

This course acquaints students with how music works through a practical study of the fundamentals of music theory at the keyboard. Students will learn to read music notation and play basic musical ideas at the keyboard. Through the examination of the materials of music, students will also learn about the natural properties of sound, the music of diverse cultures and the ethical qualities attributed to music over time. No previous knowledge of music is required. This course is taught in a piano lab.

About the Campus: Located on a breathtaking hillside at the edge of Athens, an American-style, 64-acre campus offers an ideal setting to study in Greece: modern classrooms, the ACG Library, with extensive print, online and audio-visual resources, and the College’s athletic facilities, including the FIFA designed soccer field, the Olympic-sized swimming pool, indoor and outdoor courts and fitness and exercise studios.

Exploring Greece: Visits to historical and cultural sites and excursions to Greek islands are scheduled throughout the academic year by the Office of Residential and International Student Services and the Outdoor Recreation Office. ACG Residence Life activities and events present opportunities to mingle with local students and immerse oneself in Greek and ACG culture. The Neighborhood Tour, walking tours to downtown Athens, garden movie nights and Greek cooking and Greek dancing workshops are only some of the highlights of the ACG Residence Life Program.

Housing

The American College of Greece (ACG) operates a modern Residence Complex just a short walk from campus. Students housed in ACG apartments live in a safe, clean, residential environment in a quiet neighborhood with nearby grocery stores, cafés, restaurants and shopping centers. The Residence Complex consists of fully furnished double bedrooms in shared apartments (singles and studios available for a higher fee, based on availability. Base Program Cost charge (which includes housing) will be billed to your Bursar's Account and the additional surcharge for the single/studio will be paid to ACG by students directly).
