The Staff Professional Development Grant

The Staff Professional Development Grant (SPDG) provides funding to University of Arizona (UA) staff members for short term staff exchanges with partner institutions of the UA. A foundation of collaboration between the UA department, staff member, and the partner institution must exist for funding under this program. A list of current UA partner institutions is available on our website.

There are two annual granting cycles for the SPDG. The awards are limited to a maximum of $2,000 and five awards are granted per fiscal year. Awards are applicable to airfare, meals, lodging, and other incidental travel expenses. Funding is provided to classified staff and appointed personnel only. Tenured and tenure eligible faculty, professors emeriti and visiting faculty are not eligible for these awards. Retroactive grants; (i.e., grants to be applied toward travel already completed or in progress at the time of submission of the proposal) cannot be supported. As a general rule, multiple staff members from a single department cannot be funded. No more than one grant may be awarded to an individual. These grants are non-transferable and will apply only toward the trip for which an award has been approved. If a person has previously received a SPDG, they are not eligible to apply for this grant again.

The grant is for a one way exchange only. It assists with the cost of a UA staff member traveling abroad for a short term (usually two weeks). In applying for this grant, the department of the applicant agrees to arrange housing and support for any reciprocation under the purview of the exchange.

The SPDG review committee is comprised of three UA staff members and the Director of International Student Programs and Services. The committee follows standard peer review practice and considers only those applications that are effectively documented. The committee considers only those candidates whose department has a clear and established relationship with the partner institution. Applicants must demonstrate the benefit of the experience to their career development and the University in its collaboration with the formal partner institution. Only staff members who have exhibited extraordinary leadership in their service to the University are considered competitive for funding.

The general requirements for the Staff Professional Development Grant application are five (5) copies of the following:
  • The application form, which is a fillable form on the IA website
  • Agreement of partnership between UA department and partner institution (signed by both institutions and no more than one page)
  • A letter of endorsement by the department head/division head or dean
  • Resume (maximum of two (2) pages).
