The Faculty Research Development Grant
The Faculty Research Development Grant (FRDG) provides travel support to tenured faculty for the development or continuation of international research.
There are two annual granting cycles for the FRDG. The award is limited to a maximum of $1,500 for airfare assistance only. Awards are not applicable to meals, lodging, conference fees, or other incidental travel expenses. Awards are not to directly cover the cost of travel to conferences. Funding is provided to tenured faculty; (i.e., those who have attained tenure or higher professorial rank). Tenure-eligible faculty, professors emeriti and visiting faculty are not eligible for awards. Only current research projects of exceptional value or proposed research activity of exceptional promise will be funded. Research activity solely organized or solely supported by a for-profit commercial entity is not considered for funding. Retroactive travel grants; (i.e., grants to be applied toward travel already completed or in progress at the time of submission of the proposal) cannot be supported. As a general rule, multiple researchers engaged in a single project cannot be funded. No more than one grant may be awarded to an individual within two academic years. These grants are non-transferable and will apply only toward the trip for which an award has been granted.
The FRDG review committee is comprised of three faculty members and the Executive Director of the Division of International Affairs (IA). The committee follows standard peer review practice and considers only those applications that are effectively documented. The committee considers only those candidates whose current or proposed research has validated support by peers within the particular field of research. Documentation to this effect must be provided as part of the candidate's application material. Proposals that have a clear potential to provide significant benefit to the career of the candidate or to yield long-term ties between The University of Arizona and individual scholars or research groups outside the United States are given preference. Only tenured faculty members who have exhibited extraordinary scholarship in their area of research are considered competitive for funding.
The general requirements for the Faculty Research Development Grant application are five (5) copies of the following:
-
-
A formal letter or email of invitation from the hosting institution abroad (if not in English, please provide translation)
-
A letter of endorsement by department head/division head or dean
-
